ABSTRACT
In the context of globalization and the intensification of environmental, economic, and social challenges, the sustainable development of the tourism industry has acquired strategic importance at both global and national levels. Tourism, as one of the most dynamically developing sectors of the global economy, has a significant impact on employment, regional development, the preservation of cultural heritage, and the rational use of natural resources. At the same time, the uncontrolled growth of tourist flows, inefficient resource utilization, infrastructure limitations, and institutional imbalances pose serious threats to the long-term sustainability of the industry. The purpose of this article is to provide a comprehensive analysis of the key problems and prospects for the sustainable development of tourism in the global context, with a particular focus on the conditions and specific features of the Republic of Uzbekistan. The study examines contemporary scientific approaches to the concept of sustainable tourism, analyzes major environmental, economic, and social challenges inherent in the tourism sector, and evaluates the extent to which these challenges manifest at the national level. The methodological framework of the research is based on systemic and comparative analysis, a critical review of academic literature, and the examination of official statistical and analytical sources. Special attention is paid to international experience in implementing sustainable development principles in tourism policy and the possibilities for adapting these practices to the conditions of Uzbekistan. The findings of the study identify key directions for enhancing the sustainability of the tourism industry, including the improvement of the institutional environment, the development of environmentally responsible tourism, the digitalization of tourism services, and the strengthening of cooperation between the public and private sectors. The practical significance of the research lies in the potential application of its conclusions and recommendations in the formulation of sustainable tourism development strategies at both national and regional levels
